Social Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg
For Germany’s High-Tech Agenda, the humanities and social sciences make a significant contribution to addressing societal challenges by developing historical and contemporary knowledge that provides guidance and a basis for action, and by bringing this knowledge into social and political debates.
Hamburg’s research landscape is characterized by outstanding research in the humanities and social sciences; the Understanding Written Artefacts (UWA) Cluster of Excellence—which is strongly interdisciplinary and collaborative—at the Center for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) at the University of Hamburg is a key testament to this prominent position. Furthermore, the social sciences in particular also play a decisive role in the CLICCS Cluster of Excellence. In addition to the universities in the metropolitan region, institutions such as the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut, the Research Center for Contemporary History in Hamburg (FZH), GIGA, the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH), the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, the Institute for the History of the German Jews (IGdJ), and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law shape research in the social sciences and humanities in the metropolitan region.
