Quantum Technologies in Hamburg
Hamburg is one of the most successful and dynamic hubs for quantum technologies in Germany. In the metropolitan region, the University of Hamburg, the Technical University of Hamburg, the Max Planck Society, the Fraunhofer Society, DESY, and other partners from the fields of research and technology transfer are working to better understand the fundamentals of quantum physics and translate them into technological applications.
The University of Hamburg (UHH) conducts research on all aspects of quantum technologies and develops applications, with a focus on the construction of quantum computers, quantum algorithms, quantum sensing using entangled quantum states, and quantum simulation. The Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH) contributes its engineering expertise to the development of quantum hardware, software, and applications. Fraunhofer Institutes are developing applications of quantum algorithms, for example in the maritime sector. DESY is consolidating its activities in the field of quantum science with a focus on quantum materials and quantum sensing. Large, cross-disciplinary projects, such as Hamburg Quantum Computing (HQC) by UHH and TUHH, Rymax One (UHH and industry), as well as HQML and the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative, have already created a strong ecosystem. These activities are complemented by Hamburg Quantum Innovation Capital (hqic) as a regional networking and technology transfer initiative.
As a result, a research ecosystem has emerged in Hamburg that closely integrates basic research, the training of experts, and technological development. Hamburg has everything it needs to ensure that quantum technologies can continue to be developed over the long term.
