Microelectronics in Hamburg
Hamburg has become a major hub for microelectronics and related technologies. In the metropolitan region, universities, research institutions, and industry work hand in hand to develop semiconductors, microsystems, and integrated circuits—from the initial concept through to practical application.
In the field of microelectronics, Hamburg’s research landscape is largely shaped by the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH) and DESY. The Technical University of Hamburg pools its expertise at the HELIOS Microelectronics Research Laboratory (ForLab HELIOS), the Institute of Microsystems Technology, and the Institute of High-Frequency Technology, and supports projects from the design and simulation phase through manufacturing and integration to testing and characterization. DESY is set to strengthen this field with the planned PETRA IV synchrotron, which will enable high-precision analysis of microelectronic components and semiconductors and serve as a key instrument for validating key industrial products; DESY is also a partner in the Northern Chip Network alongside the TUHH. As a partner in the HELIOS consortium, the University of Hamburg is also involved in the development and evaluation of integrated circuits as well as in the analysis of micro- and nanosystems. This is creating a research and innovation hub in Hamburg where microelectronics interacts closely with materials science, measurement technology, and applied engineering.
