Data-Intensive Research as a Driver of AI

DESY generates enormous amounts of data—ranging from two to three-digit petabytes—from structural biology, materials research, and particle physics using its accelerators (e.g., PETRA III) and through international projects (e.g., the LHC). This data serves as the raw material for AI applications and training (models) in image processing, pattern recognition (protein folding, track finding), optimization algorithms (accelerator control), and simulations (digital twins, plasma research). DESY is already using AI at facilities such as PETRA III and the European XFEL—for example, for pattern recognition in measurement data or beam optimization. The planned PETRA IV X-ray source (starting around 2032) will be one of the most brilliant in the world and will thus generate even larger amounts of data—ideal for AI training. Data-driven research using AI and HPC is an essential component of DESY’s research strategy, which is horizontally integrated into, among other areas, the research topic “Data Management and Analysis” and the Interdisciplinary Data & Analysis Facility. Other activities include AI for imaging applications in the Helmholtz Imaging incubator.

With its data expertise and research infrastructures, DESY supports the 8^th HTAD lever, “Strategic Research Infrastructures,” and lays the groundwork for AI-driven research.

Fraunhofer IAPT conducts research on additive manufacturing and industrializes the technology for sustainable innovations. Artificial intelligence plays a central role in this—for example, in the automation of design processes or in quality assurance. The FingerKIt project serves as a prime example of AI-supported design automation for additive manufacturing: In this project, the three-dimensional design of customized finger joint implants is calculated using AI based on two-dimensional X-ray images.

The Artificial Justice research group at the institute explores the possibilities and limitations of automated legal decision-making. To this end, it combines approaches and methods from the fields of law and the humanities with insights from computer science.

The TUHH’s activities in the field of artificial intelligence are strongly application-oriented and rooted in an engineering context. Key contributions are made through several BMFTR-funded projects that apply AI in embedded systems, medical technology, and sensor technology. Through the “Machine Learning in Engineering” initiative, the TUHH pools its expertise and collaborates closely with regional partners. The goal is to combine excellent basic research with strong technology transfer to industry and startups. In this way, the TUHH contributes to positioning Hamburg as an AI hub and connects scientific excellence with innovation ecosystems.
