The meeting of the PIER-PLUS Steering Committee in May 2025 was all about strengthening Hamburg as a science hub. The new Senator Maryam Blumenthal gave the keynote speech at the meeting, and the partners discussed closer coordination with regard to scientific career paths.
The focus of the 12th meeting of the PIER PLUS Steering Committee on May 20, 2025 at CFEL in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld was the strengthening and further development of Hamburg as a science hub. Together, the partners of PIER PLUS are pursuing the goal of further advancing Hamburg as an attractive and innovative location for science and research. In her keynote speech, Hamburg Senator Maryam Blumenthal (BWFG), who was invited as a guest, emphasized the importance of team spirit within Hamburg's scientific landscape and praised PIER PLUS as an important driving force for citywide cooperation.
Career paths
During the remaining session, a particular focus was placed on strengthening Hamburg as an attractive location for young researchers and shaping their career paths more effectively. Moderated by the Hamburg Research Academy (HRA), an interactive discussion format was used for this purpose, in which the participants addressed guiding questions in a total of four panels. The main focus was on promoting cross-institutional opportunities to advance transparent career paths between Hamburg's various research institutions and universities. The participants identified specific fields of action, including the further development of subject-specific career paths, better coordination of existing offers and increasing Hamburg's visibility as an attractive science location for international scientists in the early stages of their careers. The discussion of the PIER PLUS Steering Committee clearly highlighted Hamburg’s potential when academic career development is approached as a shared responsibility across institutional boundaries.
